Multi-stakeholder meeting underway, government to discuss ways to increase productivity
Ahead of the monsoon session of parliament due to take place tomorrow, the government is holding an all-party meeting today at 11am. The meeting is scheduled to formulate a strategy to maximize the productivity of the House and address opposition concerns during the term.
The meeting is convened by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend. It also includes other leaders from all political parties. The subjects that the opposition wishes to see debated during the session of Parliament will be on the agenda of the meeting.
In addition, the opposition will hold a meeting later in the day to select a candidate for the vice-presidential elections. Jagdeep Dhankhar, the governor of West Bengal, was nominated by the BJP as the candidate for the vice-president of the NDA on Saturday.
As the central government will try to push through a lot of legislation during the monsoon parliamentary session, the opposition is likely to raise issues regarding the new Agnipath recruitment program for the armed forces, unemployment and inflation, among others. .
It is pertinent to mention that the monsoon session is of utmost importance as the election of the president and vice president is to take place during this session. Presidential elections are due to take place on July 18 while vice-presidential elections will take place on August 6. The term of President Ram Nath Kovind expires on July 24 and the term of Vice President M Venaiah Naidu will end. August 10.
Bills pending in the list include:
- The Indian Antarctica Bill, 2022 is pending at the Lok Sabha.
- The Interstate River Waters Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2019. It has been adopted by the Lok Sabha and in the next session it is likely to be taken up by the Rajya Sabha.
- The Weapons of Mass Destruction and Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill 2022 has been passed by Lok Sabha and is yet to be passed by Rajya Sabha.
- The Wildlife Amendment (Protection) Bill 2021 is pending in Lok Sabha.
- The Maritime Piracy Bill 2019.
- The National Anti-Doping Bill, 2021
- Constitutional Ordinances (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) (Second Amendment) Bill 2022 (State of UP – District Name Change Amendment to be approved by Cabinet) introduced in Lok Sabha in March 2022.
New bills that will be introduced in Parliament during the monsoon session include:
- The Central Universities Amendment Bill, 2022.
- The Family Courts (Amendment) Bill 2022 is also a new bill and was sent to print on Thursday.
- Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019, (regarding the State of Assam).
- The Mediation Bill, 2021 (with a standing committee chaired by Shri Sushil Kumar Modi)
- The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2019 (standing committee report pending) and the Registration of Marriage of Non-Resident Indian Bill, 2019 (standing committee report pending).
- The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Amendment) Bill, 2019 (standing committee report pending),
- The Pesticide Management Bill, 2020 (Standing Committee report pending).
