New Native American name proposed for California town of Squaw Valley
A grassroots movement brewing in Fresno County to rename the rural town of Squaw Valley has led to a formal request for the federal government to vote on the issue.
This month, Roman Rain Tree, a resident of Fresno, sent a proposal to the American Council of Geographical Names to rename the town Nuum Valley. The reason for Rain Tree’s action is simple: the term “squaw” is “deeply offensive, racist, misogynistic and derogatory,” he wrote in his petition.
