Muslims around the world plan to observe a new moon every year before the start of the holy month of fasting, Ramadan. Different countries follow different traditions throughout the holy month, while the basic conception of religious value remains the same. The diversity of customs is very visible in Middle Eastern countries and people show great enthusiasm while following them. IRAN
There is a wide range of ethnic groups and tribes in Iran who follow different ways of celebrating the holy month of Ramadan. The people of Mazandaran (province in the north of Iran) fast three days before the start of Ramadan as a necessary exercise in the month of Shaban.
INDONESIA
Nearly 13% of the world’s Muslim population lives in Indonesia, making it the most populous Muslim country in the world. Indonesia has diverse and unique customs for Ramadan. Some groups have a tradition of cleaning the graves of their late relatives before the start of Ramadan, while some people parade through the streets holding colorful torches in their hands. Meugang is an age-old tradition in the conservative province of Aceh, in which people break their fast by slaughtering cattle and eating together and also sharing a meal with the poor.
MOROCCO
Sahar khan or drummers roam the settlements at suhoor time to wake people up to have their meal before the Fajr prayer. At the time of iftar, when the fast is broken, Moroccans have a special broth called “Harira”.
TURKEY
Famous for its Turkish delights, Turks generally like to have desserts and coffee with suhoor and iftar other than the main course.
INDIA and PAKISTAN
In terms of customs and cultures, regardless of religion, the two countries share common values. The people of Old Delhi break their fast by congregating at the famous Jama Masjid and in Lahore at the Badshahi Masjid, a similar one to the old one. The famous sharbat or sweet drink ‘Rooh Afzah’ is a staple after time, enjoyed in both countries. Men prefer to wear the traditional Kameez Shalwar attire and a bonnet throughout Ramadan.
